Nurses, midwives and nursing associates on the UK register now pay more to stay registered. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has increased its annual registration fee from £120 to £143, with the new rate applying from 1 October 2026.

The rise of £23 a year is the first increase to the NMC’s main registration fee in 11 years. The NMC says that, before tax relief, the increase works out at about £1.92 a month.

For nurses, midwives and nursing associates working in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, including at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in GP practices and in local care homes, the change will matter most at their next renewal date.

What is changing?

The NMC’s Council approved the fee increase in April 2026, after a public consultation that ran from November 2025. The new annual fee of £143 replaces the £120 fee that has been in place since 2015.

The annual fee is the amount every nurse, midwife and nursing associate pays to keep their registration active. Without active registration, a professional cannot legally practise in their registered role in the UK.

Who pays £120 and who pays £143?

According to the NMC, what you pay depends on when your fee notification is issued, not simply on the date you pay.

  • If your fee notification was issued before 1 October 2026, you pay the old fee of £120.
  • If your fee notification is issued on or after 1 October 2026, you pay the new fee of £143.

Registrants can check their fee expiry date and payment details by logging in to their MyNMC account. The NMC usually sends reminders 90 days before renewal if you are due to revalidate, or 60 days before if you are not.

How can the fee be paid?

The NMC offers three ways to pay through MyNMC:

  • Annual Direct Debit – the full fee is collected around the 1st of the month in which your fee expires.
  • Quarterly Direct Debit – the fee is split into four instalments.
  • Credit or debit card – the full amount is paid in one go. The NMC says American Express is not accepted.

If you are setting up a new Direct Debit, the NMC advises allowing 11 days for it to be processed before the start of the month in which your fee expires. If a Direct Debit collection fails, the NMC normally makes a second attempt around the 10th of that month.

Registrants may also be able to claim tax relief on their NMC fee. Details are available on the NMC website.

What happens if payment is missed?

The fee must be paid by your fee expiry date. If it is not paid in time, the NMC says your registration will automatically lapse and you will not be able to practise until you are readmitted.

The NMC says readmission can take between two and six weeks. For nurses and midwives, a lapse could mean time away from work and lost earnings, so it is worth checking your MyNMC account and payment method well before your expiry date.

Overseas applicants

The NMC’s fee proposals also cover fees for nurses and midwives who trained outside the UK and are applying to join the register:

  • Qualification evaluation fee: £140 → £167
  • Registration fee: £153 → £182
  • Standard total fees, including the Test of Competence: £1,170 → £1,226

These totals do not include visa costs, travel, accommodation or the cost of any test resits. Applicants should check the NMC’s page for internationally trained applicants to confirm which fees apply at the point they apply.

Why has the NMC increased the fee?

The NMC says registration fees make up around 97% of its income. Because the fee stayed at £120 for 11 years, the NMC says its value has fallen by about 28.8% in real terms because of inflation.

The regulator also points to a rise in its workload, including a 21% increase in Fitness to Practise referrals since 2015, and falling financial reserves. It says that if the fee had risen in line with inflation since 2015, it would now be around £168.

The NMC says the increase is needed to give it a sustainable financial future so that it can continue to regulate nursing and midwifery professionals effectively.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

  • Fee notification 1
  • Fee notification 1

  • Quarterly Direct Debit –

  • Qualification evaluation fee: £140 → £167
  • Registration fee: £153 → £182
  • Test of Competence ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള standard ആകെ ഫീസ്: £1,170 → £1,226
